5 Steps To Help Prevent Diabetic Eye Diseases

Steps To Help Prevent Diabetic Eye Diseases

Did you know people with diabetes have a high risk of developing eye diseases, such as, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts?  Here are 5 ways to help prevent further eye problems:

1. Visit Your Optometrist

You should visit your eye doctor for a detailed check-up at least once a year. Diabetic eye diseases in their early stages usually don’t have any symptoms you will notice. During your eye examination, our doctors look more closely for any early signs of eye damage and will get you started on preventative care.  The earlier you catch these diseases, the better we can prevent further eye damage.

2. Blood Sugar Test

The lens of your eye and the nerve supplying it are very sensitive to your blood sugar level. Any deviation can cause blurriness and could prove to be fatal for your eyes. Get a thorough blood test and in case of high or low blood sugar, take appropriate measures to bring it to the normal value.  If you are suddenly having blurry vision, give us a call right away to schedule a visit.

3. Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

Cholesterol and blood pressure levels are the two very serious contributing factors that one needs to be aware of. Keep a blood pressure monitor and check your blood pressure every day. Make sure to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet to keep your cholesterol levels normal.

4. Quit Using Tobacco

Smokers have a much higher risk for developing diabetic retinopathy. The best thing you can do is quit smoking, and give up any sort of tobacco intake if you are diabetic.  Your eyes will thank you.

5. Exercise

At the end of the day, it all comes down to your physical fitness. Exercise is very good for your eyes. It keeps the blood rushing in veins and increases the concentration of more capillaries for blood supply around the area. Exercise is also good for your overall health and helps you manage your weight which is helpful in a diabetic patient.
